Main problem:
Ear effusion in both ears that has lasted for over ten days, with hearing loss. Diagnosed as secretory otitis media in hospital, after discomfort in ears.
Information from mum:
1. Female, pale white face colour and dry face. There are obvious eye bags.
2. Aversion to cold, heat and wind, especially heat. Can’t endure explosure in rooms with air conditioner and electric fan on, easy to have nasal discharge and sneezing.
3 Very easy to sweat.
4. Bright red lips. Dryness in the mouth. Drinks lots of water and desires cold water. Feels dry in the mouth when waked up in the morning. Sputum in the throat. Adenoids lasts for a long time.
5. Mild appetite. Poor appetite for breakfast. Hiccups often. Physically feels weak. Feels tired after exercise. Complained about abdominal pain recently, with occasional stomachaches.
6. One bowel motion a day. Sometimes once every other day. A large amount of urination. Yellow urine. No need to get up for urination. Frequent urination during the daytime.
7. Cough occasionally with yellow sputum. Easy to excrete sputum. There is wheezy phlegm on the lungs.
8. Poor sleeping. Hard to fall asleep. Push quilt off whilst sleeping. Likes to put hands out of quilt.
9. Dry skin on body. Dry skin around eye sockets. Kind of obvious eye bags. Black eyes. Blue veins upon the bridge of the nose. Red and dry lips.
10. Bad temper recently. Nasal discharge. Allergic rhinitis.
11. Strawberry tongue tip on the right edge. Graphic tongue. Reddish tongue tip. Thick and greasy coating in the middle and rear of the tongue.
After checking into the hospital, Dr. in hospital suggested puncture method to extract ear effusion. But mum prefers herb method, so we have the initial consultation.
Prescription: Huang Qin Jia Ban Xia Sheng Jiang Tang.
Huang qin 18, raw Bai Shao 12, fried Gan Cao 12, Sheng jiang (sliced ginger) 9, Ban xia 24, Da zao (torn Chinese date) 24
One dose a day.
After 25 doses, went to hospital for check up on ears (Already had a check up during this period, and the ear effusion reduced), now no ear effusion and hearing significantly improved.
Doctor’s order: continue with the medicine to correct body type and other symptoms.
Explanation:
For this case, I’d like to clarify how to resolve exterior symptoms of patients with excessive heat from deficiency.
After talking with the mother, I learnt that the ear effusion happened after swimming in the pool.The girl got cold damp on the bodies exterior, fluid in the form of ear effusion, congealed on the exterior. In this case, the part of exterior is the EARS. Ears on the head can be considered as exterior of body. So I use Sheng jiang (Ginger) and Ban Xia to resolve the exterior. This is the basic method of how to resolve exterior symptoms for the body type or pattern of ‘excessive heat with deficient fluid and blood’. 辛苦了
